A box
Fine Sandpaper
Wood Filler
Primer and Paint
Screwdriver
Paintbrush
High Gloss Finish
Medallion/ some kind of embellishment for the front (and in my case a Dremmel to cut it with)
Crazy glue
I have a desk in my living room (which is actually a console table) and needed a place to keep stationary that would be functional and attractive. I fell in love with some lacquered boxes I'd seen recently and decided it was exactly what I needed for the desk. It was really easy to make and the total cost was only about $12. What you'll need: A box Fine Sandpaper Wood Filler Primer and Paint Screwdriver Paintbrush High Gloss Finish Medallion/ some kind of embellishment for the front (and in my case a Dremmel to cut it with) Crazy glue I began by removing the hardware (hinges and clasp) from the box and filled the clasp holes and any imperfections with wood filler. I then sanded the box with fine grit sandpaper. At this point I spray painted the hinges and screw- tops with silver spray paint so that they would match the medallion I would be applying to the front of the box. Since I didn't want to spray paint the thread, I just put strips of painters tape over the screws so only the heads would be exposed, which worked pretty well. After painting the box with primer I sanded it again and then added the first coat of paint. It took me 3 coats of white paint before I got the coverage I wanted. Finally, I spray painted the gloss coat (x2). Because I was actually using an earring to embellish the front of the box, I had to use a small Dremmel sander to cut it in half and remove the earring hook. I crazy glued the medallion to the box and re-attached the (now silver) hinges. I love that this project inspired yet another way to repurpose an everyday item like earrings!
